Abandoned cart recovery on WhatsApp: a step-by-step setup

How online shops can recover abandoned carts with WhatsApp messages, what to send and when, and how to do it within WhatsApp's rules.

Most people who add something to a cart never check out. Research from the Baymard Institute has put the average abandonment rate at around 70% for years. Some of those shoppers were only browsing, but many simply got distracted.

Email reminders help, but many reminders are never opened. WhatsApp messages tend to be read quickly, which makes WhatsApp a strong channel for a short, friendly nudge, as long as you do it properly.

What you need

  • An online shop (Shopify, WooCommerce or similar) that knows when a checkout starts but doesn't finish.
  • A WhatsApp Business account connected through the official WhatsApp Business Platform, usually via a provider.
  • Opt-in from the customer to receive WhatsApp messages, for example a checkbox at checkout.
  • Approved message templates. Business-initiated WhatsApp messages use templates approved by Meta.

The recovery flow

Step 1: Wait about an hour

Messaging after a few seconds feels creepy. Waiting a day loses the moment. Around one hour after the checkout is abandoned is a sensible starting point.

Step 2: Send one friendly reminder

Keep it short and helpful:

Hi Priya! You left a linen shirt in your cart. It's saved here: [link]. Questions about sizing or delivery? Just reply here.

No discount yet. Many people only need the reminder.

Step 3: One more nudge, optionally with an incentive

If the order is still open after about 24 hours, send a second message. This is where a small discount or free delivery can tip the balance. Don't send more than two messages for one cart.

Step 4: Stop the moment they buy

This is essential. When the order is paid, every pending message must be cancelled. Nothing annoys a customer more than a reminder for something they just bought.

Tips for better results

  • Personalise. First name and the actual product name beat "your items".
  • Invite replies. Many abandoned carts come from a question about sizing, delivery or returns. Let people ask it.
  • Measure revenue, not clicks. Track how many recovered orders and how much revenue each message brings in.
  • Respect opt-outs. Make it easy to stop messages and honour it immediately.

Done for you

Our abandoned cart WhatsApp nudge sets all of this up on your shop and WhatsApp account, including the template approval and opt-in, and stops automatically on purchase.
